Bella Freud is that famous artist’s daughter who makes those cute knits of the ‘Ginsberg is God’ and ‘Je’Taime Jane’ variety. For her latest project she’s hooked up with polo shirt kings, Fred Perry, delivering a delicious ten-piece womenswear capsule for the Blank Canvas Collection.
Doused in typical Freud traits – simple design details and off beat word placement – the designer took Fred Perry’s last six decades for her starting point, entwining it with the effect of the 1960’s Jamaican diaspora on London’s style.
‘Ska, dancehall and military nods allude to the uniform of reggae artists’ the brand tells us, which translates subtly through to the clothes while an accompanying video, below, further makes the case.
Directed by Nadia Marquard Otzen, the clip stars West London based model, Adwoa Aboah playing dress up to Sophia George’s ‘Girlie Girlie’. Thought up collaboratively between Otzen and Freud, the short is the latest in a long line of films the designer has put her name to, ranging from the recent punk themed ‘Girl Boils Egg’, to John Malkovich directed pieces from 2000.
