Toronto group Vallens know that the only way to tackle a big topic is head on – not to simply skirt around it.
This attitude makes for some bracing, moving songwriting, with the Canadian band continually pushing themselves harder and harder.
New album 'Consent' is topical, powerful, and wholly invigorating. 'Karen' deals with the tragic life story of Karen Carpenter, while 'Drag' focusses on astronauts who volunteer to travel to Mars despite knowing they will never return.
The title cut, however, is perhaps their most searing, impassioned piece of music to date. Astonishingly timely, it deals directly with the issue of consent, stating directly: "When I say so, I mean so / When I say no, I mean no…"
Out on June 24th, Clash has obtained an upfront stream. It's not all that intense – 'Tennessee Haze' is a love song, for example – but it always deals directly and honestly with whatever is placed in front of it.
