The Last Stand: Tourne de Transmission x Barry Kamen

The label and artist collaborate on a Storm exclusive.

Awareness, seditious, mindful, non-complacency – so goes the party line for ‘The Last Stand’, a one-off collaborative line from Graeme Gaughan’s Tourne de Transmission label and artist and Buffalo stylist, Barry Kamen.

An exclusive for the Danish concept store Storm (fear not, its ecommerce platform delivers to the UK), the capsule collection is a small affair, with just six pieces available.

Middle eastern politics and a curiosity about the other’s work forms the basis for the collection; an interpretation of Syrian children’s drawings shape the illustrations that appear on the cloth, while the newspaper headlines remark on Kamen’s work in the 80’s alongside the late Ray Petri.

“I’ve always loved the immediate power of headlines,” offers Barry for his part, “Seeing how the Master Ray Petri used it in the early Buffalo images cemented it in my DNA. I’ve always used text in my painting and my drawing paper of choice is plain newsprint.”

It’s perhaps no surprise then, that the headlines used in each piece were pulled directly from Kamen’s own archive; TDT then photographed each and screen printed it onto large sheets of cotton jersey by hand. The sticking plaster ‘finale’ is a Barry Kamen trademark, while the overall outcome follows in a similar vein to Matthew Miller’s recent (politically charged) ‘Born to Fail’ line.
