New York skate brand Supreme has announced a collaboration with Paris-based MM6 Maison Margiela for Spring 2024. This collection with MM6 is the latest in a long line of Supreme fashion collaborations that include Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Comme des Garçons, Rimowa and even Tiffany’s.
Founded in 1997 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela as the sister brand of his mainline Maison Margiela, MM6 has made a name for itself as the softer, subtle side of Maison Margiela’s bold, avant-garde and deconstructive designs.
Supreme, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, was founded in 1994 New York by James Jebbia. Early on the brand became a cult favourite amongst skaters, artists and musicians, particularly rappers. In recent years, the name Supreme has become synonymous with mile long store queues, sell out collections and tongue-in-cheek collaborations with luxury brands have kids and industry insiders proudly sporting the red and white logo.
As with every collaboration, Supreme takes a playful approach to the luxury house codes. In this instance, the partnership offers a fresh take on the soft tailoring and deconstruction of MM6 through patchwork designs on pieces like the faux fur coat and varsity jacket, vintage collegiate logos that read ‘Margiela Six, Supreme, 1994, Paris’ on hoodies and sweatshirts. Elsewhere a white hoodie features a softly embossed Supreme logo on the chest and the MM6 numbered logo on the sleeve, alongside a white wrapped Kryptonite® Chain, and a traditionally red Supreme skateboard is deliberately and artfully scratched and doused in white paint, all referencing the favoured colour palette of the Parisian fashion house stores and collections. The star of the collection is a bottle blonde wig with dark roots in a plastic MM6 bag, referencing Martin Margiela’s childhood in a salon with his hairdresser father. The ultimate homage to Martin Margiela, who never shies away from childhood references, famously with a wig coat at his SS09 show, this is already set to be a coveted collector’s item.
The full collection consists of a faux fur coat, a varsity jacket, a work jacket, a washed cotton suit and vest, a shirt, two t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, painter pants, shorts, a camp cap, Hanes® tank tops and crew socks, a wig, a wallet, Kryptonite® Chain, disc lock and skateboard.
Supreme®/MM6 MAISON MARGIELA will be available from Thursday, March 28th in EU/UK/US, and available from Saturday, March 30th in Asia.
