Luar Presents a Festive Reinterpretation of Its Signature Ana Bag For Zacapa Rum

Designer Raul Lopez pays homage to the influential women in his life with the seven-piece kit.

Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez made a name for himself as the co-founder of Hood By Air with Shayne Oliver in 2005. The brand’s unisex pieces and inclusive priorities cemented Lopez and Oliver’s positions as pioneers in the fashion industry before Lopez left in 2017 to create his own label Luar (Raul backwards). The brand was off to a rocky start when the pandemic hit, but has seen a spike in recent years, closing out NYFW and becoming a celebrity red carpet and street style favourite with the likes of Dua Lipa and Beyonce sporting his famed ‘Ana bag’ on multiple occasions. As Lopez’s star continues to rise and Luar with it, we recently saw Lil Nas X wearing a custom Luar look at the 2024 Met Gala, and today the brand announces a new collaboration with Guatemala’s premium rum brand Zacapa. 

The collaboration debuts a new iteration of Luar’s signature Ana bag as a travelling cocktail kit featuring a custom shaker, cocktail spoon, linen cocktail napkins, leather and Petate woven coasters and bespoke glassware. Lopez credits the women in his life as inspiration for the collaboration, namely his mother and grandmother who carried the Canasto bag through his childhood, and simultaneously honouring Lorena Vásquez, Zacapa’s Master Blender of over 39 years and one of the few female leaders in a traditionally male-dominated liquor industry. Zacapa adorns every bottle and bag with its signature Petate, each handcrafted by skilled Mayan female artisans in Guatemala as the rum brand continues to prioritise historic craftsmanship and artisan weaving.

Knowing that Zacapa supports over 700 female artisans in this tradition makes me incredibly proud to highlight their beautiful work in our collaboration.”

This collaboration centres on the Zacapa XO, a blended rum which has been finely aged for up to 25 years in specially crafted barrels, before finishing in French oak casks.

This collaboration is the culmination of a growing relationship between Raul Lopez and Zacapa who honoured the designer at the Latin American Fashion Summit last year.
