FARFETCH & Stadium Goods Celebrate 50 Years of Hip-Hop
At a South Bronx block party on a late summer evening in 1973, an 18-year-old Kool Herc, who was DJ’ing the event, began to play breakdowns of the funk and soul tracks he’d grown up on. Using two turntables, he began spinning two discs at once, extending and mixing the breaks between them both, he called this the merry-go-round. Friday 11th August 2023 marks 50 years since that night, and now officially the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop.
Farfetch is marking the occasion with a special editorial feature that explores how hip-hop has influenced sneaker culture. Curated by Zach Schlemmer of Stadium Goods, this feature journeys through the evolution of sneaker culture over the last 50 years, telling the backstory behind 12 seminal shoes with indelible ties to hip hop.
Schlemmer invited rappers midwxst and Bktherula to discuss the genre-defining legends who helped to forge a path between hip-hop and the fashion world, curating a full Farfetch wardrobe from their references. Ribbed knits, striped mohair crew necks and crystal daisy chains are just some of the highlights featured in Farfetch’s full hip-hop-inspired edit.
