For 11 years, Danish designer Astrid Anderson has worked to redefine and expand the conceptions of contemporary sportswear through her eponymous label. As the brand’s cultural impact deepened, Andersen built a dedicated fan base across fashion and music, with the likes of A$AP Rocky, M.I.A., A$AP Ferg and A$AP Nast frequently championing her designs. In 2021 Andersen announced she would be taking a break to spend time with her family, and this week, she makes a triumphant return to Copenhagen Fashion Week with a show for her new brand STEL.
Yesterday Andersen revealed ‘Collection 01’ from STEL, which directly translates as “body” in Danish, at ‘The Krane’ in Copenhagen at a see-now-buy-now presentation. Andersen’s longtime friend and collaborator A$AP Nast styled the presentation and co-hosted a post-presentation event. The brand won’t be unrecognisable from Andersen’s debut label, offering a luxury take on everyday pieces, with timeless, considered and high-quality designs at an accessible price point. Astrid’s unmistakable eye for tailoring is present, elevating classic wardrobe staples in denim and outerwear, and straight, carefully oversized proportions and layering deliver “softly powerful” silhouettes.
With STEL, Andersen will take a customer-centric approach, focusing on inclusivity, wearability and comfort at the heart of the brand as she builds a wardrobe of timeless staples. “This is tailoring you can skate in, denim you can dance in and shirting you can travel in” says Andersen.
The brand has been created in partnership with Danish entrepreneur Anders Freund, whose backing and experience enable Andersen to explore size-inclusivity and technical design pathways alongside more technical guidance in key infrastructure such as supply chain, finance and team resourcing.
“The collaboration with Anders is one of exciting authenticity” commends Andersen. More than an investor, this is a shared belief system – Anders and I are equally passionate about the desire to create a sustainable, modular wardrobe, combined with a pursuit of creating high-quality yet mindfully priced products. The infrastructure Anders provides extends far beyond simple operational efficiencies; it has provided both valuable experience and time – time to carve out an uncompromised ‘2.0’ design language and build a fresh and authentic Scandinavian wardrobe brand, as part of a long-term commitment and journey with our customer.”
