Brooding, operatic indie

Toronto three-piece Austra marry synth and opera in a way that many wouldn't dare. Vocalist Katie Stelamanis rebelled against her classical training, started going to punk shows - and somewhere along the way, Austra was born. A product of the vibrant D.I.Y scene in Toronto with members from Galaxy and Spiral Beach, the band was originally conceived to make "classical music with really fucked-up distorted crazy shit" The finished product, 'Feel it Break', is instead full of icy, shimmering synth - with resolutely danceable sensibilities. With influences as disparate as Nina Simone, Giorgio Moroder and Fever Ray - and a video already banned by Youtube - this is the sound of a band unafraid to push experimentation to the fore-front.
