Premiere + Q&A: Digitalism – ‘Go Time’

German electro duo strike back...

Digitalism are a phenomenon.

Bigger and harder than anyone else during electro's resurgence, the Hamburg duo then diversified their sound, absorbing elements of house, techno, and rock.

Continually expanding, the production pairing are set to release new album 'Mirage' on May 13th. Constructed in the short (by their standards) spell of six months, it finds Digitalism in creative mode – as Isi comments, “our secret is our new light-heartedness.”

New cut 'Go Time' is a feisty opening statement, landing punch after punch with those crisp snares and extravagant synths.

Clash is able to premiere the accompanying visuals, and we've also snagged a short Q&A with Digitalism.

Check it out now.

…and here's a quick-fire Q&A.

Could you tell us a bit about the track itself? What prompted it? Can you remember recording the initial demos?
We remember we had the main loop in our drawer from an earlier session and really wanted to do something with it. So we added drums and extra bass and when we listened to everything, the words just kind of fell into place. We usually work like that — we have music and then we “hear" melodies for potential lyrics. The very first line was “let’s get Friday out of the way”. We couldn’t get rid of it, we liked it. So we started writing around this and ended up with this collection of single phrases that make up the song.

How involved do you get in the video process?
We knew a couple of things that we wanted to include in the video for it, like a list of keywords, and then we reached out to young directors. Joan’s (Guasch, the director) work stuck out as it involved a lot with optical illusions, which was something we were after. He’s a very talented guy from Barcelona. So we packed our bags and went over to shoot on a weekend in March.

What's the story behind this video?
We get sucked into a couple of strange parallel universes, including a weird mirror world, and while we’re looking around we encounter clones of ourselves.

You're playing London'a XOYO venue on April 28th, what can fans expect?
Brand new music and our brand new show that we will just have premiered in France the day before… London is a second home for us, so it’s extra special to play at XOYO. We basically can’t wait!
