Prinzhorn Dance School have always been outsiders.
One of the few English signings on New York's ultra-hip DFA Records imprint, the south coast group specialised in the rather more abrasive side of post-punk when the world (and its cousin) seemed content on aping Gang Of Four's punk-funk schtick.
Yet time has proven them correct to follow their whims. Whereas most of their contemporaries have fallen by the wayside, Prinzhorn Dance School remains open for anyone seeking an education.
Recently working on new material at a studio in Brighton, the duo stumbled across a bona fide punk legend. Striking up a conversation with Brian James - once of The Damned - the musicians discovered that a mutual appreciation was already under way.
"At the time I just thought what a nice bloke" explains Tobin Prinz. "So I listened to 'Damned Damned Damned'. I thought, fuck, this sounds great. That guy I bumped into in the studio wrote a classic album!"
A song swap soon took place. The Brian James Gang set about mutilating a Prinzhorn track, while Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn took on 'Green Worms'. "Doing a cover exchange with The Brian James Gang was an easy choice" says Horn. "A Gang and a School united, both with respect for each others music, shared ethics - just different eras - and a label willing to press the vinyl."
'Green Worms/Usurper' is set to be released via DFA Records - pre-order link.
Before then, Clash has obtained some exclusive live footage of Prinzhorn Dance School live at All Tomorrow's Parties. Blasting through 'service, service' it demonstrates the dark, visceral nature of the band's sound.
Watch it now.
