Borrowing their name from the term for a grouping of trees, Arbouretum have a similarly vast, epic scale.
Mainstays on Thrill Jockey, the band are known for lengthy, meditative works that stretch off into the infinite depths of the soul. On new album 'Coming Out Of The Fog' though, Arbouretum display a restrained, measured side - each track clocks in under the seven minute mark.
Sure, Arbouretum are always focussed, but this new found brevity - by most people's standards - has opened up a new avenue of exploration. A close parallel would be Richard Thompson, with Dave Heumann sharing a similarly warm baritone.
Imposing, deeply poetic, nuggets shorn from an intensely personal seam, 'Coming Out Of The Fog' - whisper it - might just be the most understated album of Arbouretum's career.
Out now on Thrill Jockey, Arbouretum have handed ClashMusic a brand new video. Showcasing the title track, 'Coming Out Of The Fog' is gentle without losing its intensity, serious without failing to be seductive.
A graceful return, watch the video below.
