Wild Beasts

It’s one hell of a performance...

The Hoxton Bar and Kitchen is full of industry types and the kind of hardcore fans who go to a gig on a Monday evening. It’s definitely worth the Tuesday morning hangovers though – Wild Beasts are incredible. It’s one hell of a performance from a unique and original band.

Hailing from the home of the mint cake – Kendal, Wild Beasts are celebrating the release of Assembly, their latest single and a song which sounds nothing like anything else you’ve heard this year. Combining elements of tunes from people like Rufus Wainwright, Julie Garland and Sparks, Assembly is the perfect vehicle for lead singer, Hayden to show off his unique vocal range. Tonight, Hayden, who is all braces and 1st World War moustache, throws himself into his band’s songs in true thespian style.

The lyrics also deserve attention, “cheerio chaps” and “my top’s off, I’m a goose pimpled god” are two typical highlights from the set and they helps give the band a real ‘Show Tune’ style. Comparisons to Queen will surely follow – although this needs to be quantified. Wild Beasts demonstrate a similar operatic style to Freddie Mercury’s boys, plus a fair splattering of the smartly dressed camp, but they are actually a completely different spectacle – they are far less ‘pop/rock’ for a start.

Wild Beast’s songs are intelligent, engaging, energetic and completely fulfilling. They are band to listen to intently who will grow on you with every song. With a spring release planned for the debut album, it is something to really look forward to at the start of next year.
