Tim Goldsworthy Leaves DFA

Producer returns to the UK

New York indie-dance powerhouse DFA Records has been left in shock after co-founder Tim Goldsworthy split from the label.

Formed almost exactly a decade ago, DFA has become one of the planet’s most revered indie labels. Keeping its roster to a small compact crew of beat merchants, the imprint threw out the rulebook and began embracing any genre they fancied.

Revolutionising the way indie views dance and visa versa, DFA Records has released a stream of stunning material by the likes of LCD Soundsystem, The Juan MacLean, The Rapture and more.

However rumours emerged recently that co-founder Tim Goldsworthy had left the label. Working with James Murphy, the English producer had carved out DFA’s distinctive sound over the course of a decade.

A spokesperson for DFA told Resident Advisor: “Tim Goldsworthy moved away to somewhere in the United Kingdom, without informing anyone here at DFA. We have had no word from him since he left the United States. So we moved on with our lives and our business. Simple as that. He most definitely took a piece of us when he left, but we wish him the best with whatever he gets up to next.”

For his part, Goldsworthy has denied any ill feeling and insists that he would work with the label under the right circumstances, pointing out that physically moving doesn’t necessarily indicate a split.

“If that was the case then, well, Murphy’s never there, cause he’s always touring or in the studio, so that would mean he left, I don’t know, nine years ago or something?”

A good point.

Tim Goldsworthy remains one half of DFA Records in the eyes of John Law and has an extensive solo production record. Having worked with Hercules & Love Affair, Cut Copy and even the new Massive Attack record it seems that this won’t be the last we hear of him.
