The Week’s Best Mixes – March 1st

A pick of the best...

Here at Clash we’ve scoped out some of the best live mixes going this week from those in the know. From straight-ahead techno to spaced-out trap to arabic vibes, there’s a little bit of everything in our five top mixes from noteworthy selectors.

Skudge – Techno Gipsy Podcast 001

Following the success of their ‘Fingers / Vessel’ 12” released last year, Swedish techno greats Skudge have been going from strength to strength. Here, they’ve inaugurated a series of podcasts recorded live from Moscow’s Techno Gipsy club. Providing tunes from Friday night into Saturday morning, the duo brought a whole bag of heads-down, four-to-the-floor goodness with them to rush the Russian capital.

S-Type – Daily Dose Mix Episode 04 – BBC 1Xtra

Well lucky us… Scottish hip hop producer S-Type hopped into the 1Xtra studios to record a Daily Dose mix, featuring exclusives from the beatsmith himself including reworks of Lianna La Havas and Jamie Lidell, alongside tracks by Future, Cid Rim, Cashmere Cat, Pusha T, Obey City and Ryan Hemsworth. Just under an hour of blissed-out, spacey rap beats, and one in a series that will see the LuckyMe family hijacking the BBC airwaves from 9-10pm over twelve weeks.

Gilles Peterson – Magical Mystery Mix Part 1

International tastemaker Gilles Peterson invited us to play a little game with him on Wednesday. Compiling a mix from some music that was lying around, he has promised a vinyl bundle courtesy of Brownswood Recordings to the first person who can name the title and artist of each track. In his words, the mix contains ‘arabic tendencies with a touch of modalism etceteraaaaa…’ But unfortunately these aren’t tunes that you can just Shazam…

Elijah & Skilliam w/ Skepta – Butterzis3

Recorded live from the Butterz 3rd birthday party at Cable, grime magicians Elijah and Skilliam stepped up inside the place to spin this set. With a little radio-esque interlude with snippets from JME and Kano, the rest of the mix sees Skepta spraying some bars over instrumentals by TNGHT, Bok Bok and more. So if you didn’t manage to make it to the night, you can live vicariously through this little fifteen-minuter…

T.Williams w/ Maribou State – Rinse FM set

West London’s T.Williams, a long-running producer who has set about rejuvenating the UK garage sound through the house movement, got Maribou State along to guest on his regular Sunday Rinse FM slot. Selecting tracks from French Fries, Benoit & Sergio, Breach & Dark Sky, between them the producers prove that they’ve got pretty bang-on tastes.
