Smashing Pumpkins are set to celebrate their twentieth anniversary with a series of gigs, new releases and a special live DVD it has been announced.
The group formed as a gothic, synth-laden tribute to British groups such as The Cure before turning to a more marked, guitar-driven direction. Centred on Billy Corgan, the band’s high point came with 1995’s double album “Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness” which sold over 18.5 million copies in the US alone.
The group split in the year 2000, only to reform in 2006. Smashing Pumpkins have announced a series of gigs for their twentieth anniversary, but have not yet named the cities involved.
The band are also expected to re-issue old material, with unreleased demos and discarded tracks set to finally see the light of day. Smashing Pumpkins also have plans to issue a DVD culled from footage recorded at their two-week residency in the Filmore Theatre, San Francisco.
Smashing Pumpkins birthday celebrations are set to be finalised over the summer.
