Sigur Ros Abandon New Album

Icelandic group take break

Icelandic post-rock icons Sigur Ros have decided to abandon sessions on their upcoming album.

Sigur Ros have managed to breach the mainstream in a way that no other post rock group has. Their music moves from near ambient textures of noise rock wails, with singer Jonsi Bergisson’s stunning voice floating over the top.

Bergisson released the debut album by his artistic side project Riceboy Sleeps last year, and is currently preparing to release his first solo album. Recorded in the United States ‘Go’ is much more acoustic in direction than Sigur Ros.

With all this going on, it was difficult to see how the Icelandic band could get new material completed. Sigur Ros have spent time in the studio laying down new tracks, but in a new interview the band reveal that have now decided to take a break.

Speaking to Spinner, Jonsi Bergisson revealed that the group have decided to “start it all again”.

“We haven’t got another (Sigur Ros) album ready – It was just a rumour” he revealed. “We started to record something, but then we chucked it all away. So I think we are going to have to start it all again.”

Asked if the band were on a break Jonsi Bergisson replied: “Yes we are on a break at the moment. Everybody in the band is having babies”.

Jonsi Bergisson releases ‘Go’ on March 22nd.
