Scottish Independent Music Fair Returns

Organised by the SMIA

The Scottish Independent Music Fair is set to return for another instalment this Saturday (December 8th).

Independent music in Scotland has been in rude health of late. Some of our favourite producers, bands, labels and promoters are based North of the Border, helping to shatter any definition you want to place on Scottish music.

Returning for another instalment, the Scottish Independent Music Fair looks to be a fun day out with a real sense of purpose. Organised by the SMIA, it acts as an outlet for independent labels, allowing them to tell directly to fans.

Taking place in Glasgow's Chambre 69 venue on Saturday (December 8th) entry is free and fans can leaf through records, CDs, t-shirts, clothing and other merchandise, as well as some musical supplies. Entry is free, and you can soak up live music and DJ sets alongside food offers.

Song, By Toad lynchpin Matthew Young will be there, and the label owner opened up to ClashMusic. "Well, the most important thing for me is to be able to connect directly to music fans who care about and buy our music. As the buying of music becomes more and more of a niche purchase for collectors, that personal connection between the fan and the label is increasingly crucial" he said. "There is some talk of this kind of thing damaging shops' business, and I can sympathise with that, particularly if these fairs become too widespread. We don't want so many of them that they become the only time people come out to buy records, but at the same time, connecting the avid lovers of music more closely with the people actually making it will hopefully benefit everyone in the food chain".

Stewart Henderson at Chemikal Underground was also open in his praise of the venture. "This will be the third SMIA record fair that Chemikal Underground have taken part in and they’ve all been great so far. Increasingly, we think it’s important that music fans can make the connection between the music they listen to, the artists that record it, the labels that release it and, importantly, the shops that support music the whole year round. We all know how easy it is for people to get their hands on the music they want online now and what these fairs hopefully highlight is the creative and dedicated community of labels, musicians and retailers that all stand to benefit from everyone’s support. Live music, drinks, records a fortnight before Christmas…what’s not to like?"

Scottish Independent Music Fair takes place this Saturday (December 8th) in Glasgow's Chambre 69 between 1pm – 6pm.
