Marina & The Diamonds – A Failure?

She seems to think so...

Marina & The Diamonds are a “failure” according to the band’s own lead singer.

Marina Diamandis arrived with lofty ambitions. A self-taught singer, her natural talent was met with fierce eccentricity which marked her own from the pack. Releasing her debut album, some expected stardom to naturally follow.

Yet this hasn’t materialised. In the UK, Marina & The Diamonds have not been able to breach the mainstream while over in the United States the band remain the taste of a cult minority.

Speaking to Australian radio station Undercover FM lead singer Marina Diamandis seemed to despair at the situation. “I feel more like a failure than a success,” she said. “I haven’t done anything I want to do. For someone who wants to be one of the best artists of her generation, I’ve done fuck all.”

At one point was asked if Marina & The Diamonds had met her expectations. “No, I’m pissed off I’m not bigger” she said.

Debut album ‘The Family Jewels’ was met warmly, but failed to set the charts on fire. In the United States, the situation is even worse with the singer claiming that her American label Chop Shop have simply not promoted her.

“It’s (her American fanbase) been built purely on me and my online presence,” she said. “The label haven’t really promoted me at all.”

However Marina & The Diamonds could put that behind them on their second album. Work on new material is already under way, with the singer claiming that it will be increasingly outspoken.

“The second record will be all about the lyrics,” she said. “It’s quite political and it’s about feminism and sex. It’s an abrasive pop record.”

Marina & The Diamonds are currently in the studio.
