Liz Green is set to release her Liam Watson produced new album ‘O, Devotion!’ on November 14th.
Hidden away in her bedroom, Liz Green began her musical career in the most DIY of fashions. Writing and recording her material on the most minimal of equipment, the singer managed to secure a slot at Glastonbury.
With her striking mixture of jazz, blues and folk Liz Green was a warm inviting proposition. But balanced alongside this is an intense emotional quality, with her voice often being compared to cult American singer Karen Dalton.
Signing with Play It Again Sam, sessions began last year on Liz Green’s debut album proper. Working with Liam Watson in the Toerag Studios, the sessions ended a long period of studio-induced fear.
“I didn’t really get on with recording. After playing live, which is so of the moment, you go to a studio and are stuck in this sterile environment with microphones pointing at you. I used to dread recording days” she said recently.
“I needed someone to say, “Stop! That’s the one”. Which is what Liam did. And it finally sounded like what I thought I sounded like in my head.”
Completing ‘O, Devotion!’ earlier this year, the resulting album has a vast palette of influences. Veering between New Orleans jazz, Kurt Weill arrangements and stark folk the record seems to draw Liz Green’s disparate influences into a coherent whole.
New single ‘Displacement Song’ is a case in point. Out now, the track comes backed with a video which displays a love of shadow puppetry – watch it exclusively on ClashMusic by visiting HERE.
To gear up for the album’s release, Liz Green has confirmed a one off show in Manchester’s Portico Library on October 16th. Playing a free in-store at Rough Trade West on November 13th, the singer will then play a headline concert at King’s Place in London on November 25th.
