dexter’s Garage-Infused Search For ‘Something Real’

The South London artist is on a journey of self-discovery...

South London artist dexter is wise beyond her years. She posseses a remarkable ability to soundtrack moments of introspection, the 19-year-old’s candid wordplay a breath of fresh air. Her garage-infused new single ‘Something Real’ continues the journey of insular thinking, longing to move onto the next chapter.

The song slowly sheds the weight of dexter’s past; as the steady beat unfolds, her gentle voice promises to “take some time to learn to be myself” in the aftermath of an unnamed perpetrator. The track’s soft, effortlessly light breakbeat flow holds no bitterness; it focuses on how to grow, how to heal. The track follows on from previous single ‘Pressure’, a distorted number exploring the loss of structure that comes with leaving school.

As the first singing to RULETHEWORLD Records, dexter is slowly proving to be a force to be reckoned with. Her debut EP, 2021’s ‘I Do Love A Good Sandwich’, was recorded entirely on a MacBook and vocal mic, and was still able to reel in acclaim. Off the back of a tour with Denzel Curry and a support slot for Fred Again, it’s clear that dexter is quickly becoming a hot new name on everyone’s lips.
