Devendra Banhart Album Details

Sixth LP from folkster

A cult favourite in almost every sense Devendra Banhart is set to release his new album ‘What Will We Be’ later this year.

With his high keening voice and stark, frequently surreal material Devendra Banhart is an odd choice to be the toast of Hollywood. However after several acclaimed albums and a relationship with Natalie Portman that is exactly where he find himself.

Beginning with a series of home recorded self-produced albums Devendra Banhart slowly built up a devoted fan base. Winning over critics with his unique take on American folk music Banhart recalled hippy folk greats such as Bert Jansch and Donovon but had his own take on their legacy.

Signing with XL Recordings albums such as ‘Cripple Crow’ and ‘Smoky Rolls Down Thunder Canyon’. However Devendra Banhart has not released any new material since 2007, spending his time writing and touring.

The singer has now left XL, with his forthcoming album being his first for the entertainment titan Warners. Record in Bolinas, California the album was co-produced by Banhart and Paul Butler of British psychedelic types The Bees.

Titled ‘What Will We Be’ the album features Devendra Banhart being accompanied by the likes of Greg Rogove, Luckey Remington and Rodrigo Amarante. Amongst the song titles lurk clues to new influences, especially the Bryan Ferry inspired ’16th & Valencia, Roxy Music’.

Of course, Devendra Banhart has also been busy recently remixing Oasis. The singer was asked to pick a track from the band’s recent album ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ and responded with a typically individual remix.

Could this have been the straw that broke the camel’s back? Only Liam can tell…
