Bobby Abley – LC:M Preview

The designer has a thing for Disney.

With London Collections: Men just around the corner, we asked ten designers six burning questions (in our minds at least), and asked for a cheeky snap from their studio too. To our surprise-and great pleasure-they agreed.

Bobby Abley is today’s man in the hot seat. The Scarborough boy has a fixation with Disney-The Little Mermaid’s Ariel in particular-and showcases this interest via his collections. SS14 will be his first catwalk show under the MAN initiative.

Why do you do what you do?
For me fashion and fantasy go hand in hand. Sometimes I give myself the impression that I’ve always been looking for an alternative existence, like maybe I should be a cartoon or something, so making collections is like a trip to Disneyland for me, I can bring my fantasy worlds to life. On top of that I love how good clothes can make you feel, its like a win win

What’s your main inspiration for Spring Summer 14?
It has hints of medieval times, a bit sword in the stone. I kind of imagined, if I became king, what would be in my wardrobe

Which piece from SS13/AW13 have you found yourself wearing the most?
I wear my wood print trousers from SS13, and from AW13 I have a matching top and bottoms that I wear a lot, it wasn’t in the collection but its my bear in his spaceship print.

What track is the most overplayed in your studio right now?
Oooh I’d say  ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ by The Orb.

Which other designers work are you most interested to see at LC:M and why?
I always look forward to seeing Astrid Andersen and Alex Mattsson’s work, I think they are great designers. I’m excited to see what the other two MAN designers will present too, we have very different aesthetics so I think it will be an interesting show.

Who would you most like to see wearing your clothes?
I always struggle when people ask me this, I guess, maybe Prince Charming?

MAN presents on Sunday 16th June at 15:00.
