Alan Taylor – LC:M Preview

The Irish designer wants to see his grandad wearing his clothes.

With London Collections: Men just around the corner, we asked ten designers six burning questions (in our minds at least), and asked for a cheeky phone snap from their studio too. To our surprise-and great pleasure-they agreed.

First up is Fashion East newbie, Alan Taylor. Making his catwalk debut with MAN next Sunday, the Dublin native has assisted Simone Rocha and works above a Tesco Express.

Why do you do what you do?
Because I love creating.

What’s your main inspiration for Spring Summer 14?
This season has been a mix of several inspirations. Part of my ethos is developing garments from previous collections in both silhouette and concept to create a strong and defined style each season. For SS14 I took part of the theory of the fourth dimension, which states 'if we were four dimensional beings looking at three dimensional objects we would not see the flat two dimensional shapes that our eyes normally perceive, we would theoretically see every side of the object at once.' This came in to my work through garments growing out of other garments creating a surreal and almost mirrored silhouette. I have also taken the work of Francis Bacon and Ryan McGinley as inspiration from the colour, style and mood that they portray through their work.

Which piece from SS13/AW13 have you found yourself wearing the most?
The blue, black and off white tweed skinny trousers and asymmetrical white shirt.

What track is the most overplayed in your studio right now?
Hell Broke Luce – Tom Waits

Which other designers work are you most interested to see at LC:M and why?
Craig Green, Lou Dalton, Agi & Sam and J.W. Anderson, all these designers are doing amazing and diverse things in menswear that really reflects what is happening in London at the moment.

Who would you most like to see wearing your clothes?
My grandad.

MAN presents on Sunday 16th June at 15:00.
