Smashing Pumpkins
Reformed grunge survivors
Led by Billy Corgan, grunge act Smashing Pumpkins blended their alt rock roots with a more gothic approach. Breakthrough album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness debuted at Number One on the US Billboard charts, giving Corgan star status. Moves into electronica and aethereal pop meant the band never regained their commercial peak, though they remained one of the most successful US acts of the 90s. Increased drug use and infighting led to their break up in 2000, though the bulk of the original line up reformed in 2007. Now touring again, a new record has been announced as Smashing Pumpkins seek to re-establish themselves as one of the world's premiere rock bands.
