Quite something

An audacious, adventurous, unclassifiable fourth album from the newly expanded Austin natives: this is a seriously self-assured sonic experience. Vocalist James Petralli’s delivery remains mannered yet earthy as he sinuously weaves his elegant harmonies through an invigorating mix of psychedelic prog, Afro/Latin beats, syncopated jazz and mild mannered country. However, far from being just a technical exercise, at core ‘D’ is a complex, expansive and expressive work of art with an upbeat garage heart, recalling in part Lee Hazelwood, Gene Clarke, Steve Hillage and Captain Beefheart. Quite something.
