Essential and influential
Various Artists - Modeselektion Vol.2

The lords of progressive bass are back with a compilation that pretty much acts like a briefcase brimming full of the future designs of dance music. As Gernot and Szary continue to amass soldiers of low frequencies, their Monkeytown and 50 Weapons labels are beginning to look dangerously influential.

The roll call of artists here shouts Clark, Monolake, Dark Sky, Phon.o, Addison Groove, Mouse on Mars, Anstam and Siriusmo as well as some of Modeselektor’s own cuts. It’s about as sharp as dance culture can sound, blisteringly upfront at points whilst others, such as Monolake’s ‘Hitting The Surface’ attempt to unify Berlin and Britain’s dance scenes with a cold, deep and complex manifesto of rhythm that stretches from Croydon all the way to Germany’s rolling rave Straße’s.

Lazer Sword bring a lysergic and bustling number that broods like The Sabres of Paradise whilst Prefuse 73 takes the chance to deploy a more airy trip that breezes with sheared melodies. The highlight may well be ‘Activate’ from the Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team but it’s a steward’s enquiry so close is this pack of talent.

Modeselektion Vol.02 is a beast. Operating as an umbrella for the talents of Europe as well as a reflective surface with which to study modern dance music, its curators once again have shaken the best work from their team of bass players. Both essential and influential, get these tracks loaded into your spastic dance moves.
