Various Artists - Listen Whitey! Sound Of Black Power 1967-1973

A powerful historic record
Various Artists - Listen Whitey! Sound Of Black Power 1967-1973
‘Listen, Whitey!’ can get extremely intense. Prime examples being Kain’s ‘I Ain’t Black’, where he screams ‘YOU WHITE MOTHER FUCKER’, or Eddie Harris’s cry of “silent majority gathering around the hanging tree”. But this collection of sweat-patch inducing speeches and spoken-word performances are complimented by classic musicians. Characters such as John Lennon and Bob Dylan aptly break up any awkwardness or accidental guilt that may have ensued. If this was played in history classes, the kids that smell of urine and hate at the back may actually pay attention. I’ve never understood how music could change the world, I’ve always found the concept incredibly cheesy. But, with this powerful historic record, I could start to.
