Twin Shadow – Confess

Fitfully good

The quest for the perfect pop song is strewn with the decaying egos of songwriters of yore. On this follow-up to 2010’s excellent ‘Forget’, George Lewis Jr continues on his mission to mesh an Eighties synth sensibility to a box full of modern studio gadgets. For most of ‘Confess’ the experiment works; check out the euphoric chorus of the opening ‘Golden Light’, the paranoid pulse of ‘Five Seconds’, or the nagging earworm of ‘Run My Heart’. However, pure pop is an unforgiving master and a slight dip in quality results in the flaccid ‘Patient’ sounding like a blighted Go West off-cut. Fitfully good.
