Washing his hands in the mighty waters of the 20th century minimalist tradition with its repetitive phrases and haunted codas, Montreal’s Tim Hecker has become the Arvo Part of the electronic generation, creating mantras within music.
Exultant and enigmatic but still acutely abrasive in parts, seventh solo LP ‘Virgins’ is a nebulous thing, but not without substance; like a kite tenuously tethered to the Earth, which continually battles to fly into the stratosphere.
Piano and woodwind nestle amidst dense ambient electronics in a sound reminiscent of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Multi-layered and meanderingly hypnotic, its subtle, subliminal resonances immerse the listener in a humanist transcendentalism.
A daringly deconstructed soundtrack of the spheres.
