Since releasing their misfiring but intriguing eponymous debut, the Cardiff art-rockers have added a new drummer and shot of brutal attitude for this sophomore album.
‘Watching The Burglars’ is a yelping tribal juggernaut, which sounds like classic post-punk Adam And The Ants before they went all dandy. Both ‘Driver’s Companion’ and ‘The Venereal Game’ mimic Steve Albini’s pantomime menace, as guitars coruscate and faux misogynism rules the lyrical waves. While lead single ‘Parrot’ is weirdly creepy, and ‘Periscope Envy’ a better title than song, there is an overall atmosphere of seedy debauchery that is strangely edifying.
Constantly interesting and sonically challenging, ‘Love On An Oil Rig’ is a vital, if flawed, proposition.
