The Skygreen Leopards are back with their second album since 2006.
And after three years, they’ve decided a divergence from their previous formula was unnecessary, returning to the slurred whispering vocals and gentle bucolic sensibility done so well on ‘Disciples of California’. Opener ‘Johnny’s Theme’ is the obvious album highlight, a euphoric instrumental jaunt, while the jangly folk-pop of ‘Margery’ quivers with the perfect balance of bitter and sweet.
But the rest of the album is too sleepy, each song segueing dreamily into the next, and by the end you get the impression that you’ve been listening to a very pretty collection songs that have left little discernible impact.
