Boldly opening with a bittersweet six-minute rumination of regret titled ‘Wake Up’, The Magic Numbers’ fourth album sets out its intentions from the start.
Romeo Stodart’s plaintive vocals were always affecting, and the added harmonies of sister Michele and Angela Gannon still sweeten, but ‘Alias’ is infused with darkness, intensity, which wrenches the heartstrings.
It’s in the tragic strains of the Byrds-like ‘Shot In The Dark’ (“If loving is denied it will shatter your heart”, video below), the submissive soul of Angela’s ‘I Thought I Wasn’t Ready’ (“Love is not what it appears to be”), and the disco-flecked ‘E.N.D.’
However, drenched in trademark rosy glow, it’s all tender and consolatory.
