The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn has described this sixth album as a “less wild but bigger record” – a worrying statement from a band that has always been about the party.
Certainly, ‘Teeth Dreams’ is the New Yorkers’ burliest record to date, less feel-good and chorus-driven than previous efforts, but there’s still much to love. ‘On With The Business’ is brilliantly tense yet anthemic, while it’s just great to hear Finn’s anecdotes again.
In particular, ‘Big Cig’ is classic The Hold Steady: uplifting, grungy and basically rambling about a pretty lass who smokes fags, proving when on form this band can pluck magic from just about anywhere.
