The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten

An honorable effort
The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
It’s worrying when a band begins a record with their latest single - are they trying to ease us in before a disappointing fall? In this case album opener ‘45’ leads onto the equally as great ‘Handwritten’, which showcases Fallon’s simple but effective lyrical writing: “To ease the loss of youth and the many, many years I’ve missed you, the pages plead forgiveness, every word handwritten.” But a musical repetitiveness becomes noticeable, especially in ‘Here Comes My Man’, which echoes past effort ‘Bring It On’. An honorable effort in what they do best, but with the evolution shown in ‘American Slang’, you would have hoped this man would have grown into a superhuman by now.
