Initially, this fifth record from The Gaslight Anthem suffers from the classic rock riffs that dominate the likes of ‘Stay Vicious’, ‘1000 Years’ and ‘Ain’t That A Shame’. Mainly because it sounds like they’re trying too hard to be something they’re not. Or, rather, not be something they’re not.
Because, understandably, they’re tired of the Springsteen comparisons that have plagued them since 2008’s breakthrough record, ‘The ’59 Sound’. But that’s people being dumb. There’s always been much more to the New Jersey band.
And while they felt the need to force the issue, beneath those jarring, incongruous riffs lies some rock ‘n’ roll of the purest kind.
