After the success of 2011’s ‘Barton Hollow’, the question was whether the Nashville-based duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White could take it up a level.
And, they do. Starting off in typically sombre mood, this follow-up from The Civil Wars shows clear intent for melancholic immersion.
Williams has the voice of a broken angel, and its combination with White’s Tennessee roots makes for a harmonic experience.
White shares vocals on ‘I Had Me A Girl’, and the interplay is passionately convincing.
Serene yet disturbed, this is album that progresses the band well – but with the pair on a seemingly irrevocable hiatus, will that progression lead them anywhere?
