A stew of sounds
Tarwater - Inside The Ship

Eleven albums in, and the German space oddities haven’t gotten any easier to pigeonhole. ‘Inside The Ship’ is by turns folky, funky and shot through with moments of glistening techno. The results are mixed. ‘Radio War’ sounds not unlike Air’s offbeat pop and ‘In A Day’ has a cool motorik beat. But while the band are keen to throw everything into the mix (bagpipes? Yeah! Brass and vocoders? Why not!) the album sounds unfocussed and, for such a forward-thinking group, a bit dated. It’s a stew of sounds you’ve heard before on better, more distinctive records - some of them by Tarwater themselves.
