‘Spiderwebbed’ is the fiercely confident debut from Bristol-based artist Stumbeline. Evolving from the imprints left by Burial, Bonobo and Clubroot, this is an album equally uplifting as it is cathartically dense. Stumbeline’s sounds are synonymous with the genre; clouded synth, distorted guitars and alienated vocals litter the album but subtle composure elevates his work above blog scene mediocrity. A smoky, ethereal cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’ acts as the emotional core here, with LA vocalist Steffaloo providing a vital performance. It may be a tried and tested formula but inspiration as beautifully realised as this is hard to ignore.
