A disappointing collection
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Mirror Traffic

Fifteen years ago, the prospect of a Beck-produced Stephen Malkmus album would have been met with pant-wetting excitement. This, Malkmus’ third (or fourth depending on which folklore you believe) outing with The Jicks, is a disappointing collection of hits and misses - with the latter winning on points. Opener ‘Tigers’ is a muscular Pavement-esque workout, and while the country twang of ‘Long Hard Book’ and the gut-punch of fuzz anthem ‘Tune Grief’ raise hopes of a classic, the clunky talk of “blow jobs” on ‘Senator’ and the AOR noodlings on several of the over-busy fifteen tracks becomes a frustrating annoyance. File under ‘What Could Have Been’.
