Thin Lizzy are undoubtedly one of the great rock bands of all time.
Phil Lynott, as the band’s founder and figurehead, was a hugely charismatic performer and consummate songwriter. This is a man who straddled the divergent rock and punk scenes – following Lizzy even playing in a band with the Pistols’ Steve Jones and Paul Cook. And he did this as a black Irish man in the height of Seventies prejudice.
Although dated in its format and graphics, The Rocker draws on a huge amount of source material to paint a well thought out profile of the great man himself with concert and video footage spliced together with interviews from the likes of Slash, Huey Lewis, Jon Bon Jovi and band mates such as Scott Gorham and Brian Downey. But it’s the interviews with Phil’s mother Philomena and the first ever recorded interview with his wife Caroline Crowther that really stand-out – a telling insight into a loving husband and father who has left a huge musical legacy since his untimely death in 1987.
