Prefuse 73 - Only She Chapters

‘The Only She Chapters’ teams Guillermo Scott Herren up with an impressive cast of female vocalists (Zola Jesus, Trish Keenan and more) but wades ever further away from the mutant hip-hop that made his name. The Keenan collab is a big clue, with the whole album treading a similar path to Broadcast And The Focus Group’s astonishing Witch Cults Of The Radio Age. Herren dodges traditional song structures in favour of a bricolage of twisted vocal fragments and drones. Alas, a good third of the album meanders and there’s a drab formlessness to his sonic fog. Fascinating but flawed.
