Owl City - Ocean Eyes

Despite selling nearly two million copies of his single ‘Fireflies’ and making it onto the BBC’s Sound of 2010 long list, Owl City’s major label debut ‘Ocean Eyes’ is a damp squib.

Attempts at quirky retro-nouveau electro pop fail, and what could have been beautiful simplistic song writing is rendered nothing more than an over-vocoded mess. His broad American drawl sweeps across watery laptop beats as he sings about such humdrum subjects as his dentist and croons nonsensical drivel about laying awake all night dreaming of being with his beloved. It’s all very pretty sounding on paper, but in reality lazily produced and poorly written.
