Debut English language only outing
Ólöf Arnalds - Sudden Elevation

Icelandic female vocalist with curious delivery and a fondness for sonic experimentation? Can’t see that combination ever getting anywhere. On this, her third album, Arnalds has opted to sing entirely in English for the first time, although the lyrics are always playing second fiddle to her utterly captivating vocals. When Arnalds comes in near the start of ‘Call It What You Want’ the shrill burst is both shocking and captivating, immediately elevating the song to something special. Somewhere between the elongated delivery of Joanna Newsom and the peculiarly soulful croak of Karen Dalton, this is a clear case of the voice as an additional instrument.
