A genre-morphing triumph...
of Montreal - Lousy With Sylvianbriar

Having ridden a white horse onto the stage and performed as his transsexual alter ego Georgie Fruit, it’s hard to predict what of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes will do next.

So for the Athens, Georgia band’s 12th album, it’s not so surprising that they eschew studio trickery for lyric-driven ’70s songcraft with country twangs and lush harmonies.

Among Barnes’ insightful vignettes about social media and self-loathing, highlight ‘Colossus’ (audio below) is a macabre yet touching character portrait with The Flaming Lips-style psychedelic swirls.

Although ‘Lousy With Sylvianbriar’ lacks the violent eclecticism of their 2007 classic ‘Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?’, it’s a genre-morphing triumph that reveals new surprises with each listen.
