Supergroups have a tendency to create more hype from the media than the collective can deliver on record. So with Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), M.Ward and also Mike Mogis on production duties, expectations are understandably high.
Full of emotion and fresh ideas (admirably not sounding too much like one band or another), they deliver some neat country-folk tracks particularly ‘Man Named Truth’, ‘His Masters Voice’ and ‘The Right Place’.
Throughout, the cascading guitars and careful production all work really well and sound wise it’s what you’d expect from a record made up of the aforementioned. It won’t win any awards but if you’re a fan of any of the above then you can’t go wrong.
