Having gone top 20 in the UK with 2011’s ‘The Hunter’, it’s safe to say that Atlanta metal foursome Mastodon are firmly mainstream these days.
But then, when you’ve monster riffs like these, existing exclusively on the margins was never an option. That Mastodon would be as welcomed on a Glastonbury stage as they will be Sonisphere’s is evidence of the band’s amazing articulation of their chosen art – this is hard-and-heavy music that equally achieves a real accessibility.
It’s studied, sure – these guys are superbly technically proficient – but never is the fun obscured by fretwork pyrotechnics. So smile along as album six infects the senses.
