Maps & Atlases - Beware And Be Grateful

Maps & Atlases - Beware And Be Grateful
With the 2010 debut ‘Perch Patchwork’ remaining largely critically unclaimed, the Chicago quartet have spawned the sophomore. There’s a high degree of musical dexterity that has led to accusations of math rock, something that does the band a disservice, for they’re somewhat more kaleidoscopic than that tag suggests. Whilst there are complexities in places, the arrangements remain simple enough and the whole album exudes a warmth and comfort, which helps it transcend its predecessor. The melodies are strong and the balance between seriousness and nonchalance has been well struck, resulting in an honest and admirable collection that merits some attention.
