Life In A Day

One day on Earth via YouTube
Life-in-a-Day.jpg
July 24th 2010: a day largely like any other day. Yet thousands heeded a call from YouTube to document their experience of the day by uploading their own video. Kevin MacDonald, Ridley Scott, Joe Walker and their team shifted through eighty thousand submissions totalling over four thousand hours of film to tell the story of one single day on Earth.

The result is a multinational experience that covers almost the entire spectrum of the human condition. Although it features footage ranging from the Love Parade tragedy to a Korean man who has spent a decade exploring the world by bicycle, the vast majority of the film highlights the emotions of minor personal triumphs and setbacks, as well as the grinding routine of existence. Despite numerous downbeat moments, the film acts as a surprisingly uplifting celebration of being alive that provides an insight into the scope of experiences that a single day on earth offers.

Whether this represents a breakthrough in mass collaborative filmmaking remains to be seen given its reliance on YouTube (to compile the videos) and the experienced team behind it (to weave those elements into a cohesive narrative). Yet it represents a beautiful encapsulation of one moment in time.
