James Vincent McMorrow – Post Tropical

A slightly surprising departure for the Irish singer...

James Vincent McMorrow made a bit of a name for himself with 2010’s debut album, ‘Early In The Morning’. Its brand of folksy balladry has been rather voguish (often irritatingly so) in recent times.

But ‘Post Tropical’ represents a slightly surprising departure for the Irish singer, avoiding the tested formula of his inaugural effort. With little in the way of jangly guitars, soulful vocal melodies instead come to the fore; in fact, there’s a subtle R&B feel to many of the tracks, as with wonderful lead single ‘Cavalier’ (video below).

Its delicacy and sentimentality may strike a cheesy note on first listen, but ‘Post-Tropical’ is a definite grower.

8/10
