Promising but overstuffed debut
I Was A King - I Was A King

Imagine being in the lucky shoes of Frode Stromstad. You’ve more ideas than you know what to do with, are on jamming terms with Sufjan Stevens and have a host of other CV-waving musos thumping on the studio door. Great!’re too kind to wield the axe. Your power-pop debut fizzes with overdriven grit, all swelling valves and sugary melodies, yet all too often the hooks are piled in at the expense of space and delicacy. The more conventional joys of ‘Stay Warm’ and ‘It’s All You’ work purely as they’re allowed to go somewhere: because of such reasons, the crown hangs only just beyond Stromstad’s reach.
